Our Story

The Alliance of Tradition and Excellence

Welcome to the website of Champagne François Chaumont, winegrower since 1994 in Puisieulx. As the first-generation winemaker in the Chaumont family, I took over an ancestral 5-hectare vineyard with passion and determination. The estate stands out for its specific grape varieties, with 1/3 chardonnay and 2/3 pinot noir, giving the wines a unique personality full of character.

Married to Marie-Hélène Littière, a winemaker from Oeuilly, I have the privilege of benefiting fully from the facilities and expertise of Champagne Michel Littière. It is in this exceptional setting that I create a unique champagne, using exclusively grapes from the Puisieulx Grand Cru vineyards.

Champagne François Chaumont embodies the perfect harmony between the exceptional terroir of Puisieulx and a know-how combining tradition, innovation and love of the craft. Each bottle tells the story of my family, my dedication to winemaking excellence, and my respect for the land and terroirs. Discover the essence of my passion in every sip, and let yourself be carried away by the authenticity and quality of our champagnes.

From Vines to Wine

The Vineyard

In the northern part of the Champagne vineyards, below the northern slopes of the Grande Montagne de Reims, Puisieulx is one of Champagne's 17 Grands Crus. It's certainly one of the lesser-known of the Champagne Grands Crus, because of its modest size (just 18 hectares). But Puisieulx is surrounded by other, better-known Grands Crus such as Sillery, Mailly-Champagne and Verzenay.

Spread out on a gentle south-east-facing slope, the vineyard benefits from light soil and a chalky subsoil composed mainly of graveluche, i.e. chalk that has been gelifracted by thousands of years of successive freezing and thawing, transforming it into chalk gravel, creating a light, draining, highly calcareous soil and subsoil that is above all ideal for vines.

The vineyard is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grape varieties express their full potential on this very chalky terroir.

Vineyard protection against various diseases and parasites is carried out according to the principle of "lutte raisonnée". In practice, this means :

  • under-dosed treatments according to the progress of vegetation and the potentially estimated disease risk.
  • repeat treatments only when necessary (depending on weather conditions, disease virulence, etc.).
  • no insecticides, but protection against grape worms by sexual confusion.
  • mechanical soil maintenance (ploughing), no chemical weedkillers used.
  • a limited amount of nitrogen in organic form, based on the needs of each vineyard plot.

Since 2018, our winery has been certified High Environmental Value level 3 lane A, the most demanding level.

The Wine

A Puisieulx winegrower since 1994, in 2008 I began to vinify part of my harvest myself. I benefit from the facilities and know-how of my wife, who represents the 3rd generation of winegrowers in the Littière family in Oeuilly.

All winemaking operations are carried out at Oeuilly: pressing, fermentation, blending, tirage, riddling, disgorging, dressing, etc. In a modern cellar capable of producing top-quality champagnes, Puisieulx's Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays can fully express their potential to produce Champagne François Chaumont's Blanc de Noirs, Blanc de Blancs and Rosé cuvées.
